Malpas to Tarporley 15.25 miles (24.4Km.)

Soon after leaving Malpas and following a drag along Cholmondeley Road and Shay Lane we rejoin the Sandstone Trail to make a tour of the grand Manor House Stables. Not an intimate tour because the path that once passed through the building topped by the clock tower, has now been diverted around the edge. It’s easy to follow the waymarked path and perhaps, if you are lucky, see a future champion horse in training.

We now start the climb to Bickerton Hill and eventually arrive at the Iron Age fort of Maiden Castle and the start of a stunning ridge walk with views north to the Mersey, Liverpool and the mountains of North Wales. The guide convinces me I can see the Anglican cathedral at Liverpool but I’m unable to offer a picture as proof. While the trees obscure the distant views the outcrops of red sandstone and stage set groups of Fly Agaric toadstools provide photographic interest.

I’m impressed by the effort that has been made to promote the Sandstone Trail with pleasant stone mile posts and large cast iron display boards adding to the waymarking and fingerposts along the route.

This memorable section of the GEW draws to a close with a backward view of Beeston Castle from the bridge crossing the Chester section of the Shropshire Union canal before we arrive at the smart Cheshire market town of Tarporley where I dearly wanted to enter the Swan Inn but settled for lunch in the churchyard.
