Departure from Tarporley retains the flavour of the area where the Portal Hotel Spa, and three golf courses make this, according to their publicity “a world-class championship golf venue”. As our guides warn, look for the stile hidden in the hedge before the the surfaced path ends at a gate.

The leg of Oulton Park racing circuit was quiet on the day I passed by. The path runs alongside an old and crumbling wall which has signs warning us to keep away, however the stiles are immediately adjacent. Yet another example of warning us of the danger without making the situation safe. “Beware barbed wire”, “Beware of the Bull” and “Beware golf balls” being just some of the warnings seen on the walk.

This is a very flat section of the walk but I’m pleased that Cheshire is the dairy of England and the fields are nearly all grass. Much better than the endless ploughed fields of heavy clay found in other parts of the country. I fancied a pint at the Boot & Slipper Inn but the two hand pumps had the clips reversed an indication that the real ales were not available, so I pressed on and made do with water.

The final approach path to Church Minshull has been opened up which offers encouragement to report any other problems encountered along the way.

Church Minshull - during a lull in traffic

Church Minshull - during a lull in traffic

There are interesting buildings in the village but sadly the traffic dominates here especially at five in the evening. The Badger Inn was closed for major refurbishment having obtained Listed Building consent in June 2009 for “Demolition of Existing Rear Single Storey Extension, Creating Six Bedrooms and Separate Managers Flat Extension to Restaurant and Toilets” The rear of the church offred a quiet resting place as I waited for my lift back to digs near Crewe.
